A straight breakdown for a seven-night trip for two – what the flights, resort, car, and the fees nobody mentions actually add up to.
The short answer
That is the honest middle. A careful shoulder-season trip with a condo and a few big-ticket activities lands near the bottom. A beachfront resort on Maui in December, with a luau, a helicopter tour, and dinners out, lands near the top – or above it.
The number moves most on three things: which island, which month, and whether your resort charges a nightly fee. We plan around all three.

Flights (mainland US)

Round trip. West coast is cheapest; East coast and holidays run high.
Hotel or resort
$280 – $900 / night
Mid-range beach hotel to a full-service resort on Maui or Kauai.
Rental car
$60 – $120 / day
Essentially required on every island except Oahu.
Food
$90 – $180 pp / day
Groceries plus a mix of casual meals and a few nicer dinners.
Activities
$400 – $1,000 pp
Luau, snorkel or catamaran trip, Road to Hana, a helicopter tour.
Resort fees & parking
$35 – $75 / night
Charged by most resorts on top of the room rate. Easy to miss.
Figures are per trip for two travellers unless marked “pp” (per person), based on what we book for clients. Peak weeks – Christmas, New Year, spring break – run 30 to 50 percent above these ranges.
Worth knowing
Late April to early June and September to mid-November give you the same weather for noticeably less.
Oahu is the cheapest to reach and get around. Maui and Kauai cost more but feel calmer.
Two islands in one week adds flights, a second car, and half a day of travel. Often not worth it.
Resort fees, parking, and cleaning charges can add $600 to a week without appearing in the headline rate.
