Kansai, Japan

Kyoto

Kyoto is Japan concentrated – not the Japan of speed and neon, but of patience and precision. Seventeen UNESCO sites, a thousand temples, and a food culture refined over centuries. The mistake most first-timers make is trying to see all of it in three days.

"Go to Fushimi Inari at five in the morning. It is a completely different place before the crowds arrive."

Sample Itinerary

What a week might look like

Day 1

Arrival & Gion

Settle into your machiya townhouse. An evening walk through Gion with a local guide – the neighborhood as it is, not as it is photographed.

Day 2

Temples and tea

Pre-dawn at Fushimi Inari. A private tea ceremony at midday. The Philosopher’s Path in the afternoon.

Day 3

Arashiyama and craft

The bamboo grove at first light, tofu kaiseki over a garden, and an afternoon with a paper-making artisan.

Days 4-5

Nara, then onward

A day trip to Nara for the deer park and Todai-ji. A final omakase dinner, then the morning bullet train.
